Stem Opt Extension – August 8th Deadline

Those students who currently have a 17-month STEM extension may apply to USCIS for an additional 7 months of OPT time. To request the additional time, the student must file Form I-765 with the required USCIS filing fee on or before August 8, 2016. This means that the application must be received by USCIS by August 8, 2016. Any extension applications requesting the 7-month extension filed after August 8, 2016 will be denied.

To receive the additional 7 months of OPT, the following criteria must be met:

1) You are currently on OPT based on a 17 month STEM extension;

2) You request the additional 7 months of OPT by filing Form I-765 with fee between May 10, 2016 and August 8, 2016 and within 60 days of the date your DSO enters the recommendation for the OPT extension into your SEVIS record;

3) You have at least 150 days of valid employment authorization remaining on your 17 month OPT period on the date the I-765 is filed with USCIS; and

4) You, your DSO and your employer meet all of the 24-month STEM OPT extension requirements (See our March 9, 2016 update on 24 month STEM below)
